Apple Slab Pie

Apple slab pie is a delicious and convenient dessert that’s perfect for feeding a crowd! Here’s a simple recipe to get you started:

Ingredients

For the Crust:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water

For the Filling:

  • 6 to 8 cups apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (to thicken)

Instructions

  1. Make the Crust:
    • In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and sugar. Add the cubed butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Gradually add ice water, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half, flatten into disks, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Set aside to let the juices mix.
  3. Assemble the Pie:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Roll out one disk of dough on a floured surface to fit a large baking sheet (about 18×13 inches). Transfer to the sheet and trim any excess.
    • Pour the apple filling onto the crust, spreading it evenly.
    • Roll out the second disk of dough and place it over the filling. Seal the edges by crimping or pressing with a fork. Cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil.
    • Let cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Serving Suggestions

Serve warm or at room temperature, possibly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on the side. Enjoy your delicious apple slab pie!
