Here’s a delicious recipe for Homemade Picadillo, a flavorful and comforting dish that’s popular in many Latin American cuisines.

Homemade Picadillo

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground pork)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper (green or red), chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes (with juices)
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup olives, sliced (green or black, to taste)
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Sauté the Vegetables:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper, and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  2. Brown the Meat:
    • Add the ground beef (or pork) to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Add Tomatoes and Seasonings:
    • Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, olives, raisins, cumin, oregano, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.
  4. Simmer:
    • Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Stir occasionally and adjust seasoning to taste.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the picadillo warm, garnished with fresh cilantro or parsley. It pairs well with rice, black beans, or tortillas.
